My girlfriend is getting her first tat. She's thought about it for 7 years, same design, so it's time to get it done. The tat is about 5 inches by 3 inches, all black, on her mid back. It's a custom designed pattern that is very simple to replicate and is nothing too intricate. In fact, I've drawn it on her back with a sharpee and it comes out reasonable enough. Anyone have any idea of how much it might cost? I want to take her some place in Los Angeles to get it done for her birthday. I'd like to take her to an upscale shop, so if anybody had any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.

I live in Australia so the pricing will be different.. Generally a tattoo shop will have a minimum price that way people are not getting little tatts all the time for cheap etc.. So before you go call a few different places and see if they have a hourly charge or minimum charge (normally $50)
Also the price will vary depending on where you go, if you go to a tattoo studio that deals with alot of tourists the chances are there pricing will be more expensive.. HOWEVER you do get what you pay for so dont say no just because he is expensive.. check out if they are in a "tourist hot spot" etc.. you will only need to see the address to figure that out.. Without seeing the tattoo I would say anywhere from $100 - $200 but as I said before I am in Australia so things are different.. Hope this helps!

Depends on where you go. You can go to the tattooist for a quote. Mine was $120, and it is an intricate sun about 3 inches around and colored. A simple black and white one will cost much less. They charged an extra $20 for the color. Your girlfriend doesn't need to be there for a price, since you know how big it is and what it looks like. Mine was done in southern PA, so I'm sure it will cost more in LA.

Well most shops from my experience charge by the hour... Depending on the shop it can be anywhere from $100/hr and up. If it's not too complicated and you don't think it'd take that long, then it shouldn't be too much. The shop I go to charges me 120 an hour so a 2 hour tattoo cost me 140 bucks. I've never heard of a place charging by the letter... That sounds a little ridiculous to me... And also don't forget to tip your tattoo artist!! Also, choose what shop you go to based on how clean and professional they seem... Not by how cheap they are!! It's not considered strange to ask to see photos of their work or to ask about their cleaning methods.

My tat is about 3x3 on my ankle, custom drawn by the artist. Blacks and brown tones. I got it 3 years ago in Rochester, MN and paid $100 plus tip at the top place in town.
Go to the best place. Ask around. Talk to the artist before your appointment. Be on time. Tip well. Follow the aftercare instructions and go back or call with any questions.

Cost depends on the size, color, detail...etc.. of a tattoo. Every artist is different on their price.
Alot of artists charge by the hour. usually $100-120-$150 an hour. some places are less some are more.
It really depends on where you go. When you walk into a tattoo shop have at least $200 in your pocket.
Tattoos are expensive.. my last cost me $300 but it is well worth it if you love it.

Are you crazy??
She may get a blood disease from the tattoo--especially a solid tattoo. She might get an infection too. She doesnt need one.
What the matter? Not enough attention when you were growing up?
If you want to risk your health go ahead. But after you go to the hospital with hepitiis B and pray for your body to heal and think that it just may not, think about how stupid you were.
Good luck

some places charge by piece. and others by time. i have been places that cost approx. 60-80 dollars per hour. at upscale places! the more detail the higher the price. shouldn't be to bad since its all in black. color and detail take more time.

depends on the size usually, black ink is generally less expensive. if the artist charges by the hour, they're trying to get your money, and artwork is rarely a concern. make sure they are clean, and charge by design!
