It shows a file folder, says SYSTEM 32 in the blue bar and then shows many many file folders which appear to be names of hardware (drivers, etc.).

It could be part of the MARI virus.

Go to start menu

Select FIND

Files and folders

Look for

system32.exe

There should be none. It doesn't exist. If you get a system32.exe, then it's a virus.

Go to Norton web site and see if there is a free tool for this!

There is NO reason for the System 32 file to come up without something in the system calling for it. That means something wrote a line in to open this folder at start up.

System 32 files work silently in the background and the systems calls for them as needed during start up. There is NO NEED for you to aware of this or to see the folder, which is inside the main Windows folder.

This also happens when incomplete entries are made by software in the Registry.

It would probably be too difficult for you to find this, so if it is NOT a virus then you need to get or buy a complete REGISTRY repair program, that, hopefully, will find the offending " and correct it. Yes, it's merely a quote mark out of place or where it shouldn't be. A simple...

It could be a background program starting up, I know some HP cameras will do something like this. However, you may want to run spyware-adware removers to make sure it isn't a spyware-adware problem.

If you find out it is a piece of software starting up, if you set it to not start up when Windows starts up, the window may not come up, but the program would not be ready to run either, in the case of camera software, it may not automatically download pictures from a camera that was plugged in.

If you are on a company network, it could be the logon scripts running.
