The regular playing card version of the game is called "Crazy Eights". It's the survivor of a card game from the 1500's called "Comet", named after Hailey's Comet. For what it's worth, I myself use the "Hoyle" variation. In the book "Hoyle's Rules Of Games" it has the 2's as "Draw Two" cards. If the player before you lays down a 2, you have to draw two cards. Unless you have a 2 yourself, in which case, you can instead lay that onto the discard stack, which makes the next player draw four cards, unless he lays down a 2, which makes the next player draw six cards, unless he also lays down a 2, which makes the next player draw eight cards.
Also, the Hoyle book has 8's as "Wild" cards, hence the title of the game; "Crazy Eights". Jacks are the "Skip" cards, Kings are the "Reverse Direction" cards and the Queen of Spades makes the next player draw five cards and lose his turn.
I hope this helps.
