You may respond with the same amount of force to get away from him. If he hits and run, you can't chase him down and hit him three weeks later. It would be best to file charges against him. That would hurt more.

Only if you are UNDER THE AGE OF EIGHTEEN! Cause that childs parents can press chargers against you if you are an adult! And in most states after the age of 18 you are considered an adult~
