The Department for Education and Skills website lists all institutions offering courses leading to degrees from recognised universities. It also provides warnings about bogus degrees.
There is no legal requirement that independent colleges are inspected or accredited; only voluntary schemes exist. The British Council and the British Accreditation Council for Independent Further and Higher Education (BAC) both operate voluntary schemes of inspection and 'recognition'. However, only 350 institutions have chosen to be accredited in this way.
the USA, there are licensed universities that are not accredited because accreditation is voluntary. In the UK, degree awarding powers are granted by the Privy Council Office and you cannot get that without obtaining accreditation from the QAA (Quality Assurance Agency).

May not be .Verify from official sources like University Guidance Bureaus,nearest college/university or Association of Universities.Many Universities coming in internet offering degrees on line/correspondence/based on experiance etc are only in paper.
