Don't know, but if you really deserve the child more and you want the child then go ahead and prove it.

The reason for this is because men over all the years did not want to take care of a child like the mother did. In fact, a lot of them bailed out as quickly as they could because they appeared to be terrorized of the whole idea of taking care of a child. This has changed over the years, but our laws have not caught up with society during that period of time. The mother also has gone through all the pain that comes with carrying and child with her body and soul, then all the pain that comes with giving brith to that child. There is an attachment there that happens most of the time, when a mother finds out she is pregnant. There are acceptions to that rule. I truly beleive that taking care of a child should be the responsiblity of both mom and dad. You should share that child, not try to destroy or hurt each other through the child. This happens almost all the time and the child develops mental probelms due to this. The child has to fight the emotional problems with loving both mom and dad. Just try to join together in making the child understand how much you love that child and talk to the mother and see about sharing your responsiblities for that child. the child will need all the love and taking care of you both can give in this day and time.

This is not a legal answer by any means -- I think a lot has to do with the physical birth -- after all, you can see the child come out of the mother, so you know it's hers. It's not always certain who the father could be (just watch any soap opera!) so, that's why it's probably automatic for the mom to get rights.
Fair? No. But that's what happens when slugs step out of their responsibility of being a father. Too many spoiled it for the good guys.

You need a better lawyer or something. Talk to a father who has custody of his kids, I know a few of them myself, in IL

Because you're probably a white male and if you try to stand up for Males rights you're a chauvinist, or a racist and definatley an asshole, but if anyone else does it its great and respected. Welcome to Catch-22 city.
