watching them when they came out in the 90s, I always thought that they were pot-heads. My friend contended that they were just naturally stupid surfer guys. What do you think?

They are just stupid, but they could pass as potheads. Most of their stoner-isms come from just the poor acting experience they both had at the time.

Give me a break, this is the story of two guys who are forming their own garage band. The emulate the guys they have seen in rock videos and on MTV. Listen to what they are saying. They still haven't learned to play the guitars. You never see them with a pipe or bong. They never talk about getting wasted. They are justa couple of air heads from San Dimas, trying to get rich and score some babes. They also have no boards, so surfing is not in the picture. They are slackers. They just happen to save the world through Rock and Roll. Now, the guys who wrote the script may have been stoned. Rufus, who names their child Rufus? But, this was all about wanting to be a rock star at a time when most rock stars sounded like these guys.

They remind me of Sean Penn's character in Fast Times of Ridgemont High, just stupid surfer guys. They remind me of guy valley girls. Girls loved them, and it was just a stupid idea that became stupid classics, but hey, I like watching them.

I don't remember there being any drug references, and there was maybe one alcohol reference (when they were in the saloon in the "Wild West", ask for beers and say "Dude, we didn't even get carded!"). I think they were just your typical surfers.
