Because that is what the United States Code says:

"Except as otherwise provided in this title [sections 451 to 471a of this Appendix] it shall be the duty of every male citizen of the United States, and every other male person residing in the United States, who, on the day or days fixed for the first or any subsequent registration, is between the ages of eighteen and twenty-six, to present himself for and submit to registration at such time or times and place or places, and in such manner, as shall be determined by proclamation of the President and by rules and regulations prescribed hereunder"
-------------

As to WHY the U.S. Code says what it does, bear in mind that the last time there actually was a draft in the United States was during the Vietnam War, which took place at a time when people's attitude toward women in combat (or, for that matter, women in general) was very different from what it is today. I would like to think that in the unlikely, and unfortunate, event that the United States ever starts drafting people again, it will do so on a gender-neutral basis.

Because until recently women weren't allowed in active combat situations. We don't have to register with the selective service because the government never got around to changing the laws. Plus we should be home making babies and apple pies anyway.

Women will hate me for this but here it goes.Women are not built like men.Physically a man is stronger.usually faster, and more aggressive(able to kill). This does not always apply ,but in most cases is true.I think it is a good idea not to commit ALL of any generation to a war.In WW2 if the women had not been at home working hard to keep the country moving, the nation might have collapsed. This is all personal opinion only, and I do think it is a good idea to have women in the armed forces on a voluntary basis.it maintains a certain balance. If you look at history women were not at home making babies. They were at home making tanks ,planes ,and bullets.

Because warfare has traditionally been a male-dominated industry, and because the Equal Rights Amendment was never passed in the 1970s, there is no legal basis for establishing womens' equality in the military.

he will be unable to get federal student loans, or sign in to vote. i'm attempting to figure out your "common sense" the following. So, because Rush Limbaugh and Dick Cheney not in any respect served in the military, that signifies that your son would not ought to sign in for selective service? Um, so because Obama not in any respect served does that advise that conservative youngsters do not ought to sign in? I swear, attempting to figure out "liberal common sense" is sufficient to furnish you a migraine.

The draft is very sexist in that manner. Only boys, as you have to stay home and raise the babies for the next war.
