As answered before:

Ask someone trained to swim show you how otherwise don't chance it especially if you are scared. Because if you get in over your head and panic chances of you remembering any advice given here is slim. Always swim with someone else anyway if you are going to be in deep water. That's the best advice I can give!

Learning to swim is a lot like learning to ride a bike. It is hard at first and then when you get the feel for it you are on your way. A previous answerer had a pretty good description of how to get started so I agree with him except for one thing. You can get an idea in your head by reading tips and such of how to swim but you still need to teach your body how to do it. The best way is practice practice practice. If you don't want more lessons, then ask a friend to go swimming with you to a public pool with a lifeguard present and have fun and try to learn to float hanging onto the side. Once you build your confidence, you might want to try lessons later.

I think it will be fun to try answer this question!

You may try following the simple steps :
- Hold on to wall of the pool, Kick back both your legs, Feel your leg float. You may even try putting your face under water and try to open your eyes inside water
- Once you think you can let your legs float for a few seconds, try to push the wall with your hands while floating. You should be able to float on water for a few seconds with your arms stretched in the front. Hold your breath and keep your eyes open inside water. You should be able to float for a few seconds relaxing your muscles.
- Once you can float, you pretty much got the balance. Now try
to flap your legs with the hands still stretched in the front. See if you can move.
- If you feel that you can move for a couple feet this way, now try pushing the water with both hands alternating. Arms should move in anticlockwise direction.
- Once you can manuvre this way, you can try to blow all the air out while inside water and lift the face up to get a quick breath of air. You will drink water a couple times trying it.

This is just basics. To try this in a deep end where you may drown, please contact a professional.
Note : Please try these where it is absolutely safe and there is someone like a lifeguard to help you
:-)

If you really want to swim get lessons or find a friend that will help you.

The key to learning is to be relaxed in the water. Being able to put your face in the water and open your eyes and blow bubbles. Your body is bouyant. Learn to float. And get lessons if you really want to enjoy the water.

get in deep water, have two people on each side of you....when you go under petal yourself back up, breath, ask for help the first time then say no you can do it....fight with your legs, thrust with your arms..dont panic, breathing as if you were being murdered will cause you to drown...breathe easy, if you cant breathe so easy then try to pace it while fighting for your life....you'll eventually get the hang of it....but do let the people in the water be aware that this is a new experience to you and if you don't come up after 4 seconds then they had best dive down...dont worry, in 4 seconds you aren't going to go that far.

Sounds as though you need a little cross training, if you are thoroughly exhausted by swimming. Do you do any jogging? Or bike riding? Both are good for helping you to get in better condition.

the best thing I can say is to get comforable with the water. Get used to dunking your head under first. Once you get the feel of the water everything pretty much falls in place. Good Luck.
