There were some instances of that very thing in WW2 wherein the captain or commander of the ship/sub would set his crew out in life boats and take the ship/sub down to keep it out of enemies hands.

Only in the US civil war has the US ever had a water going vessel taken and used against it, that being by Gen. Nathan B. Forest, CSA at Johnsonville, TN on the TN River, late in the war. He captured a couple union river boats, loaded a few cannon on them and set out up & down the river causing havoc amongst the union troops before finally being forced to abandon it and burn it to the eater line.

You may read about that at "Save the Gun Boat", where there is a conservation group attempting to salvage the remains of the old vessel for display and it's historical significance. ***The USS Pueblo was taken by N Korea but not used against the US in war.

No the captain will not go down with his ship. I have done commercial ship salvage all over the world. most of the time we respond to them before they sink completely. and If the have sunk the captain is alway at the pre salvage meeting to discuss the operation of the ship salvage corp.
