I'm not gay myself but have close friends and relatives who are and I'm disgusted at the judgemental attacks made on gay people asking genuine questions. Is it any different from racism?
I live in Australia and most people I know would find this kind of judgement abhorrent - and they are from all walks of life and ages. Do I live in a Utopian society or do we just get a very small sample of the attitudes of other countries here?

Just to clarify, mainly for the purposes of Price Uranus: In being proud of the country I live in (I actually come from the UK) , I am not denegrating anyone elses. Everyones culture is interesting and valid. Just making the comment that I don't encounter as much segregation in Aus as I have other places.

I haven't been on here much in the last few days so i don't know if you are talking about something specific. I do know when i see asinine ?s on that topic, i go out of my way to rip them up. I cant and wont apologize for all the aholes in the US, but i will tell u i am not one of them! I'm not gay either, but i may as well b for all the fighting i do on their behalf. i too have people in my life that r and they are the best people IN my life. i have traveled to a lot of places, Australia is not one of them, but the more i hear about it the more i want to visit. I am hoping we are not just getting a small sample of the juvenile attitudes, so i stay positive and keep telling myself it is the MINORITY, not the majority.

Yes---you live in a Utopian society. Well, to be truthful, no, you don't. Hmmm, what word comes to mind from our close friends and comrades, the Aussies?

"Poofter" comes to mind. Here is the definition and some examples of its usage from the "Urban Dictionary":

2. Well it's just another word for a gay dude, the rest of the world stole it from us Aussies, so I am here by taking it back.

Andrew: *running around in hot pink as$less chaps with a muscle shirt on and a little shitzu with him*

Me: "Oh Jesus Christ andrew, your such a bloody poofter"

Andrew: "Oh be nice" * runs away crying with his shitzu behind him

3. Aussie slang for a homosexual, used first in the 60's. Now used all around the world. poofter is the same as "fart knocker"(which also means homosexual)

"piss off you rooting poofter"

4. A Derogatory Put Down Or Homo! British Slang!
Thadius the Australian is a Poofter cos he thinks its an Ozz word ,Its Not,Only Aboriginal words are Ozz the rest of their language was shipped down there with our Convicts!

Stop Being Such a Poofter!

8. A male pillow biter.

That guy is a pillow biter. He takes it up the as$. Bloody poofter.

OK, ms "I'm so much better than you Americans because you are gay bashers and I'm not!", its YOUR OWN COUNTRY that came up with a unique word for a homo!

sheesh---what a moron.

I haven't seen that much. Are you looking for it? Being a bit homophobic, I understand why people are acting disgusted. Gay people have expressed themselves with extreme confidence whereby the average person still clams up about the simplest things. Sometimes when gay people express themselves so openly, they appear to be a bit flamboyant (guys, mostly). When you are raised in a family/society which is generally considered reserved, the flamboyant or open behaviour can be disturbing and even alarming. Maybe you're reading too much into what is posted on this site. Take a look at some peoples' answers! Are they helpful, or are they just there to get a reaction!!??

Unfortunately, some people just have a need to be heard. And some are just afraid of anyone who's different. Their loss, I say. And it's not any different than racism. Both are forms of discrimination. As for your last question, I really hope this is just a small sample of attitudes.

I am also an Aussie and yes I do find it abhorrent.I believe in live and let live.
I too have many gay friends and I feel offended for them.
Racism and Bigotry are the diseases that through the ages there has not been found a cure.
They are cancers of the mind.

Sadly, this is a subject that will take a long time for people to get used to. Some people are not raised correctly, so they sometimes believe gay people are like some type of perverts who will sleep with every single same sex person they see. I just want to let you know I don't believe that and I believe homosexuals should be treated as equals, but I have heard a lot of, ehm, "opposing" views in my school.

It seems that many people here have to have someone or something to hate. People should learn to accept others as they are, as long as they do not harm themselves or innocent people. It amazes me that there is still so much hate in the world. People judge you on everything: your sexual preference, the color of your skin, your weight, your gender, your income, your intelligence, or your religion. I don't think people should label other people. Maybe we should try to look at things from the other persons perspective. Just learn to live and let live.

There is a lot of gay bashing on here. Along with any other bashing, people can think of , to get others irritated enough to respond to their question. Why are people so mean? I don't understand how so many, can be so unhappy. Maybe it's just cheap entertainment for their lonely little lives . . :)

I agree with Prince Uranus---Australia DID come up with a whole new word for gay. You owe him an apology for being mean to him.
