Nationalism is becoming a Republican value. Patriotism is a shared value.
Patriots sacrifice out of generosity for their fellow men in the pursuit of freedom for all. The ideal of liberty supersedes material comforts because in order to be truly free individuals must live among other freemen. Patriots are humble in their duty to fight for universal liberty.
Nationalists sacrifice out of self-indulgence in their quest for greatness. The belief in their culture’s superiority supplants all other principles. The only people allowed to be free are those who think, act and vote like they do. Nationalists are arrogant in their duty to follow politicians seeking hegemony over the earth.
Patriots seek peace; nationalists require conflict. Patriots defend an ideal of non-aggression; nationalists impose their beliefs with aggression. Patriots offer an example of how men may be free by acting like freemen; nationalists never know freedom because they subjugate themselves to the collective and its leaders. Patriots believe in political freedom; nationalists believe in political power. Patriots believe that dissent is essential to distilling truth in political matters; nationalists believe that dissent is traitorous to the One True Vision that all must be loyal too.

Wow, what are you asking? Patriotism has always been a Republican value, and a Democratic value. And why would you blame someone for being Patriotic and what do you mean both parties are at fault? Are you saying there is some conspiracy to make people like the country they live in? Oh yea, Communists, Socialists, Nazis and any other political party uses patriotism as a value base too.

The problem does lie with both parties. I just saw an interview about "Fight Club Politics" and the author argued that the only time Democrats and Republicans will agree is when it comes to maintaining incumbency. Otherwise, the ability to cooperate on anything has been completely degraded. It used to be that politicians could speak about their "esteemed gentleman across the aisle." Now, we've had politicians call a fellow representative a "faq" on the floor.
I partially blame talk radio culture for creating an atmosphere where insults and "bumper sticker" slogans replace true argument based on facts.
Where it all falls apart is the polticization of "patriotism". It is no more a Republican value than caring for ones family. It's sad that the partisan atmosphere has allowed for people to call people America-haters when they simply question policy. It has become the de rigeur tool to dismiss true discussion and replace it with angry bile.

I believe Patriotism is a strong value of the Republican Party.
I was a Democrat once...(my family was...so I was) The reason I became a Republican was Ronald Reagan. Under the Carter administration, patriotism in America was dead, the flag was treated so poorly, (burned and worn as a patch on the butt of jeans) and there was no respect for the military. President Reagan brought back the love for our country, our military and our flag.
I believe there are patriotic Democrats.. my family was very patriotic. However, I have seen more patriotism in the Republican Party..

Well the left can be seen using problems in Iraq to beat up on the administration. They seem to gain glee from soldiers who commit crimes, to the number of dead and wounded. Remember the day they lost the 2500th soldier? It was sickening to see how the left "used" that to try and gain political ground. They, like everyone else, should be rooting for the guys who don't cut off heads, don't kill innocent civilians on purpose and target them.
Now the right is using some legitimate cries about the war to say the left is anti American; the left is not patriotic. I mean the left has every right to ask where the WMD's are and to demand the links between al queda and saddams goverment (which are getting pretty clear now).

No, patriotism has nothing to do with political parties. It's just that republicans try to justify all the stupid things Bush does in the name of the flag. When others try to argue that all Bush wants is money republicans brings up patriotism because that's the best come back they can think of.

they are hiding behind it because they have no facts to back up their actions...
I don't think I've ever heard a liberal say someone was "un-American" on here... because it's silly for the most part, you don't argue with name calling...
what's the first thing when you do when you can't win an argument... call the other side names like "un-patriotic"... classic slander... the sad thing is... some are stupid enough to believe it...
I don't know... maybe that's the thing now days... you don't need facts... just who can call the other person the better name... Republicans are clearly winning that battle...
Panacea: who's openly rooting? do you have to lie to make a point? it was conservatives (crazy ones mind you) that protested outside of soldier funerals, but apparently I have the common sense to know that all conservatives aren't like that... logic you seem to sorely lack...

Why can't you blame one party? The democrats have been completely taken over by marxist scum and are quite clearly no longer working in the interests of the american people. The republicans are, for the most part.
It's not that the republicans are so patriotic. They are just appropriate in their level of support for our country, our troops etc. It's that the dems have become downright traitorous....openly rooting for the enemy in many cases.
This is unacceptable.

who specifically is doing what? Society changes value. Once upon a time unmarried pregnant woman were ostracized, public opinion changed that. Patriotism is a love for your country, that's an individual or group theme. Politics or political rhetoric, neither makes or breaks a patriots values
