A democracy doesn't protect the minority while a republic does have protections for the minority. In a true democracy, the majority rules and can make laws against minorities. And, we don't have a democracy we have a republic.

Well I guess if you want to be provocative, you can ask a question that includes an illogical statement. Then you can sit back and enjoy the babbling hyperbole.

But the fact is that we do live in a democracy, and a pretty damned good one at that. We have a representative form of a liberal democracy (by strict definition), not an unwieldy direct democracy, where each citizen votes on each issue.

Think for a moment what would happen if you let the majority rule dictate most decisions. Self-interest would run roughshod over the needs of the nation as a whole. Instead we elect representatives and cause them to govern in our general interest, under the rule of law.

Remember, we began this all with a Constitution that established our rights as citizens and the checks and balances of three independent branches of government: the Executive, the Legislative and the Judicial.

Sorry for the civics lesson. I know it's not the kind of hyperbole you were hoping for. But I'm proud of our government... I wouldn't trade it for any other.

Would you?

A true democracy in a nation of 300 million people is impossible. If the United States of America had a true democracy, all 300 million people would vote on everything, all the way down to whether or not Bensalem, Pennsylvania should hire another police officer all the way up to whether the nation should impose sanctions on Iran. You see, a true democracy is only possible if every single person votes on every issue...it's really micromanagement at its finest. A true democracy is only possible in nations or municipalities the size of a small town.

In the United States of America, we have a democratic republic, not a true democracy. The difference is that we only vote on our leaders who then decide on all of the issues. It's much more efficient.

We do have Democracy in the USA...It is written in the Constitution. It seems like we don't have Democracy now because the Republicans have been in power for so long. Until they are all kicked out, nothing will change!

I know its interesting isn't it. We spout the ideals of democracy and try to tell other nations that democracy is the only way to be and yet we don't even have one here in the so-called great United States of America. Very interesting. I thought it was just me.

we dont have a democracy. The president is a civil SERVENT. we all seem to have let it slide by that he has more power than we do. in a democracy the populus is the power, so why do we all sit here and just take whatever they are dishing out. lets all let the government know that we all know whats good for ourselves. and lets start by giving Das Boot to the income tax.....just a thought.

I really hate to disappoint everyone but the US is not a democracy, it is a republic. Remember the words, "and the republic for which it stands."

We really never had one to start with.Judicial immunity is one, people whom dole out the law,are above the law, that we are held to.Whats fare and equal about that,These are just some of what is hidden from lay people. The system is still one of the better ones in the world, but still needs the scum purged. So,we all are accountable for our actions on level ground.
