Accountants are the doctors of the business world...no one wants to pay one; everyone needs one. There are general accountants and specialists. We run tests, examine data, evaluate activities, discover problems, and solve problems. We research and study because the accounting world changes continuously. Everyday is a deadline and never is there a dull or lonely moment. We are blamed for everything and credited for nothing. If you're looking for a career that will provide personal satisfaction over awards and rewards...this is a good profession. I've never heard an accountant say that they were bored at work.
I love it.

I started as a CPA then got into education for 3-18 yr-olds. Accounting is divided into many parts: tax (private or government), auditing, risk management/consulting, managerial accounting, corporate book-keeping, etc.
My personal experience was tax with one of the Big 4 companies (after so many mergers, that's all's left), but I do know other aspects as well. If you do decide to become a CPA, I highly recommend that you try the Big 4. People respect the Big 4. Stay until at least you become a manager. Your knowledge and experience will be a strong asset when working with kids later too. I found my experience with Big 4 quite exciting actually, but everyone is different.
Best thing would be talk to your career counselor at your college and go to the Beta Alpah Psi (student organization at each business school) sponsored events (in fact, become a member). You'll learn all about various aspects of accounting, then you can judge for yourself if it's something you want to be involved with.

i am an accountant and no it really isn't boring. it depends on what you like though. i had a friend that hated it. but there are so many options out there. i do a lot of work with taxes (mainly personal but some corporate) and auditing of homeowner's associations. you can go into something like forensic accounting, or even go for a law degree. an accounting degree can get you into so many different business fields. i am sure that no matter you will be able to find something in the field that you really do like.

No, I'm not an accountant, but I have taken accounting classes. If you really have an interest in it and love working with numbers, then do it. It can be a little tedious for me, and I wouldn't be able to do it the rest of my life, but there are so many different feilds to go into accounting that you might not even realize.

You should plan your College courses and degree in such a way that one of the Big Eight CPA firms will hire you. You will find working for a large CPA firm very exciting and you should, in due course, become a CPA. You can then choose your specialization or go into Practice. That is a lot better than being a Controller or CFO, in my opinion.

you can start with basic financial and managerial accounting during your first year of college. if you like the challenges of those, then pursue it. but if you hate them, don't.
i never did like accounting, yet i'm an accountant. i did it because it was 'convenient'. now, everyday i haul my azz to work playing with spreadsheets.
but i don't despair. the pay is swell (not as good as financial analysts') but to me it is just drudgery. easy and boring.
but being a part-time saint keeps me sane so don't feel sorry for me.
God bless.
