The thing that makes parties fun for me are a group of people who get along with each other, good food and in a comfortable setting. Avoid loud music, trying new recipes or inviting people you know don't get along.

I would say good food and good drinks... but make sure to have good music as well, even if it's just on in the background. You should also have something to keep guests entertained as well, such as a game or some sort of theme to the party.

Watching your friends get drunk and make asses of themselves.
Really though, just have a nice, relaxed environment where people can be themselves and talk, hang out, or have the freedom to do whatever they feel like doing. Outdoor parties are cool, and if you have one make sure you can have a fire at night. It's a good way to bring people together to talk or just enjoy each other's company.
