Respect should be given to people based upon the fact that they are created in God's image. But there's a difference between giving a person respect and respecting a person because they have admirable qualities that engender a respectful attitude in others.

Respect is not a thing it is a feeling so it cannot be earned it can only be given by the person who has the feeling. Nobody can make you feel something you don't feel, therefore no matter what great feats or accomplishments one person does they have no control over whether or not it will gain someone else's respect. They actually have nothing to do with it unless they have been given an ultimatum. Exampe: If you do this you will have earned my respect.

Like it or not, but respect should be given, but more importantly, earned. I think respect is quite subjective. For example, we should respect other people's decision or privacy, respect your elders, etc... In other words, common courtesy. In this context, respect means acknowledgement to certain rights. A respect earned is when someone does something (any actions in particular) that is deemed good or well deserved in the eyes of the society or individuals. For example, you have respect for a basketball player for his amazing skills in a game or respecting someone who upholds moral values, etc...

However, earning respect is always a lot harder than gaining it. It is easier to lose respect rather than to gain it. For example, a person that you thought were an exemplary person suddenly was convicted for several charges, etc...

I hope that could help you out a little. =)

Everyone should be entitled to a basic level of respect, which is what one calls common courtesy.Failure to reciprocate results in lose of respect, and responding in kind to common courtesy is ground for earning a higher level of respect.

It is only earned, in rare cases it is given when perhaps you say excuse me as you try to pass by down the aisle of the theatre or supermarket line. Then some one has given you the respect of honoring your excuse.

Both
Respect is a thing that is most powerful when earned. Yet it should be freely given to such things as morality, the law and your fellow person at least unti lthere is reason to not have it for these things. Therefore it is really something that is fluid.

I believe you should show respect to almost everyone, however, if they have done something to lose that respect, they would need to make a serious effort to regain it .
