ISO is an extension normally associated with CD's. It's a type of media storage extension for mounting CD volumes. To open an ISO file you would need a program that reads ISO's such as WinISO ot WinRAR. There are other ISO readers out there, I would recommend doing a Google search.

An .iso is a disc image. Basically someone has made a copy of a CD to their hard drive, but in one big file that has all the files in it. Normally to use an iso, you need to burn it to a CD using a "burn disc image" option. This will recreate the copied CD on a new CD, like making a direct copy.
You can also find programs to open and extract files from an iso.

An ISO file is a disk image.
As such, it will contain directories, programs, data files, executibles - pretty much anything.
The easy way to view it is to burn it onto a CD and read the CD.
