I'm afraid sweatshops are an issue that governments will have to deal with. Consumers really can't discourage these multi-national corporations from doing things like that, because we have no way of knowing what sort of labor they use or where they get their products from.

It's up to regulators to fix it. Unfortunately, they aren't doing much more than creating laws and negotiating treaties that permit companies to dodge labor laws by "outsourcing" things internationally. In other words, they're partially responsible for creating the problem.

The reality is that most clothing you buy now is made in China, Dominican Republic or some other third world country. The simple reason is that they can get cheap labor to make the same product as unnion workers would in the states.
These are sometimes referred to as "sweat shops" and many hire young kids to do some of the work. Most reputable U.S. companies, however, try to regulate these factories so they don't hire kids and have decent working conditions, although they still pay them very little because they don't have to. The people in these countries are so poor they'll work for any wage just to stay alive. And there's no law here that says these companies can't hire cheaper labor overseas.
That's the reality - the irony is that we're heading slowly in that direction also. We are also turning into a country that has rich and poor with not much in between.

Wal-Mart is by far the worst of the bunch. The Waltons have built a literal empire on the backs of slaves. And every penny spent there ensures that millions will remain impoverished.

The Gap, Wal-Mart, most places that sell clothing don't ask questions about how they get their clothing. Most likely sweatshop labor.

Unfortunately, it's pretty purvasive, meaning it's just about everywhere. all you can really do is keep your eyes open and try to make the best decisions possible.
