Expect amazingly gorgeous countryside and trees around this time of year, flanked by old, quaint buildings in bavaria. In the bigger cities, expect lots of people, both cheap and expensive shopping, basically cities like here in the U.S. In the smaller, yet famous cities, you will find old walled cities, with many markets containing trinkets and items all handcrafted like there used to be all over Germany. Fabulous old churches and architecture, dating back to the Gothic and medieval time periods. Renaissance influence can be seen all over the region. You will find old castles in the area, great dining all over (dont go to mcdonalds....shame shame...), and very friendly people. Most people speak English there so you will have no problem finding your way around or people to talk to. So long as you mind your travel manners, you wont offend anyone being a stuck-up American.
also, be prepared for your meal schedule to be off a little bit...they eat fairly small breakfasts consisting mostly of bread and some small meats...some fruit possibly. If you are staying with some guests, expect only bread and marmalade. If in a hotel, their continental breakfast will be maybe some yogurt as well. Lunch can be big or small, or even nonexistent. Dinner tends to be larger in restaurants. No dessert is really ordered but it does exist.
They also make things in strange packaging. Drinks are almost ALWAYS in plastic or glass bottles which must be returned. you will probably pay a small deposit on them and must bring them back. Milk is found in a box. Powdered substances are in bagged items. Dont be surprised by the strange things...they dont drink very much except sparkling water and alcohol. Be prepared for Sparkling water, they dont usually provide still water like in the states. Sparkling apple juice is popular too, as apfelschorle. Schorle means usually a drink mixed with sprite so you can get a wine schorle which is like a wine cooler. They only drink coke products so basically sprite and coke. Usually you wont find them drink much else. Limited, eh?
oh, and by the way, the keyboard has the y and z switched...so zou can expect some strange tzping!
