They picked their mascot. In that respect, I am sure they knew what they were doing. And then maybe not.

It goes back to the presidency of Andrew Jackson. He was a great general and a stubborn man. People said that he was as stubborn as a donkey so he decided to make that animal his mascot. It has been used by Dems ever since. I'd rather have a jackass as a mascot than one for a president. Maybe the Repubs could use chimps.

Someone refered to a republican as a head-strong bull-headed animal, and someone represented that in a political cartoon long ago as an elephant. Hence, their mascot. Similarly, a demecrat long ago was refered to as a "jackass" (most likely by a republican) for their defiant ways (remember, the republicans came first) of the order. The Demecrats, wanting to change the old ways, kinda took a "You're DANG RIGHT I'm defiant!" attitude towards it, and adopted the donkey as thier mascott. I'm not sure if I'm 100% right, but I read something on it, and I know I'm close.

No more irony than the republican mascot being "Dumbo."
