Yes and No.

I don't think people communicate less, but people are becoming less social. People don't go out and meet other people, because they have the computer to chat and blog etc.

Yet, on the other hand, for people who are really lonely and don't have family or friends, technology is a savior. They can use the computer and 'virtually' talk to people.

Just like everything, technology has its good and bad.

You need to define "communicate": differences in interpretation by individuals determine how they answer the question. Personally, I find the technology liberating and take advantage of it. I have a chronic illness which makes me tired all the time. The technology enables me to do more with less effort. If I had to write letters the old-fashioned way, crossing out (poorly chosen, misspelled, etc) words here and there, re-wording sentences and scratching out entire (garbage) paragraphs like I used to do (in the old days) then...well...I just WOULDN'T. I remember writing letters and not mailing them because I either would forget about them or else was just too tired or lazy to walk to a mailbox. A number just ended up thrown away, months later. YA, the good old days. Uh-huh. Fer sure, fer sure.

I believe that people communicate more, but it's less personal, so I also believe that the communication has less meaning.
When you had to actually "see" a person to communicate with them, you're allowed to interact with them in a way that modern technology can't.
You can try to comfort someone by sending them a cheery e-mail. You can physically help ease their pain by giving them a simple hug, and the support of your physical presence.
Technology has allowed us to contact people easily, but it has also taken away from that contact.

Verbal, visual, physical and emmotional communication directly between man to man have decreased with technological advance. But electronic communication and junk communication have increased. Just look at majority of questions and answers in yahoo answers, most are junk and fall in electronic communication segment. Take chatting, sms etc majority are junk communication (ie just to keep in touch ).

I think people who live farther apart communicate more, but are less personal. For example, many of us have typed something lately or have picked up the phone and talked to someone, but how long has it been since we handwrote a letter to someone?
