It completely depends on the movie. Some movies do so poorly on their opening weekend that they are removed almost immediately (for example, Gigli). Other movies continue making money for the theater so they stay around a long time. Revenge of the Sith was still in some theaters where I live when it came out on DVD. Theaters are only going to keep movies around if people are still coming to see them. They want more people to come in and buy overpriced soda and popcorn.

That depends on how successful the movie is in the box office.
Popular movies stay at the theaters for a couple months. Used to be, before Dollar and Home theaters, you could still go see a movie sometimes 4 or 5 months after it premiered, depending on if it was successful and popular.
These days, instead of having 12 rheaters with different movies in each, they get multiple copies 3 or 4 movies from the studios and then run them in all theaters. This cuts down on the length of time the movie can run before all copies are returned to the studios. Popular, successful movies? As long as 3 months. Bad movies no one is watching? Sometimes, less than a week.

It varies by movie. If it does not make it's budget back in the first weekend, usually not much longer than a week. Sometimes it comes and goes fast if there is already a dvd release schedule. Big hit titles stay running for longer.
