Let's see what scenarios could be played out here. Suppose you left and put up a sign. Wouldn't that be alerting everyone that reads it there is no-one there and cause a potential robbery? Suppose you left and didn't put up a sign and your boss shows up. Wouldn't he wonder where you were? Now, suppose you stay and when he returns you explain the situation to him. Then it becomes his problem because after all he is the boss. You need to devise a plan between the two of you if this situation does arise again so you will know exactly what to do. I think your boss would be pissed if you left the shop regardless of whether or not you post a sign. Stay put and let happen what will happen.

If you know how to differenciate priorities then you will not upset your boss. Things like going to post office is not as important because the postal box is always open to the public at any time and if you need to check on certain thing do make a telephone call instead of going all the way. Banking system has the latest technology of banking at the teller machine. You can actually manage your time to run all these errant efficiently. If there is something that is so urgent or important, putting up a small notice and be back at the shortest time will not upset your boss as your reasons are valid and justied.

I would call your boss and tell him what needs to get done and see what he tells you to do. You don't want to just leave and risk getting in trouble.

I would just leave. It will only take you a few minutes.

But you've probably gone by now...I hope you went.
