This was a question on a recent driver's license test and we have found many facts about opening doors under water but very little about windows.

The easiest way is to already have your windows open. However, on the off day that your windows are closed and you drive into a lake, roll them down no later than 2 seconds upon contact with water. If you don't, your car will begin filling with water that, once it floods the car, will NEVER be equal to the pressure of the bottom of the lake. Keep in mind that you are in a car.. The car is the thing holding all of the water pressure... If you kick out a window, which is quite impossible to do if you're at the bottom of a lake (there is approximately 50-200psi acting on the car), then the water pressure will equal that of the bottom. If the lake is deep enough to where the pressure begins to crush the car, you won't feel it until it's too late!!!

Roll the windows down IMMEDIATELY. If you cannot due to them being powered and usually the switch on the door will short out, wait for interior to fill with water so the pressure inside and outside the vehicle will be equal. Then open the door.

Wait until the water fills up inside the car, silly!
Once the water pressure is equal on both sides of the glass, it will roll down normally. Oh by the way, be sure to hold your breath before all the air is gone.

In regards to opening a window, I don't think that it matters when. Since it's not like the window is pushing against the water. Though like someone else said, if you're already underwater, perhaps you should bust the window to try and escape before water fills in too quickly.

(probably best to escape as soon as possible).

What you may do is that if the residing house windows have not short circuited yet, then attempt to roll them down as far as they circulate and take your previous few breaths. do not panic! Then if it does not equalize in tension than take your seatbelt and carry close the buckle in a fist, then you certainly punch the window nearest you. by no ability do the winsheild for the reason that's laminated it fairly is a waste of time and it will by no ability shatter, plus you're able to have a extensive fist of water pushing you on your seat, so once you shatter the window anticipate the stress to equalize. What you ought to do now's merely pull on the door take care of and the door ought to unlatch itself from the jam. Whant you do now's slowly and gently attempt to push the door out with a finger or 3. or you will run out of power. undergo in concepts you're actually not more suitable than any of nature's creations, hence the water. while the door is unfastened take a breath and get out of the vehicle, in case you have different swin to their doorways and tell them to push gently and help them by ability of gently pulling on the door.

As soon as you can. Otherwise you have to wait for the car to be almost submerged so the pressure is equalized (or you could bust out a window, but that's tough.)

Before it is submerged. You would want to have a centerpunch to break the window if you were submerged.
