Dinosaurs became extinct millions of years before humans inhabited the earth, but it's quite possible that stories about dragons were a way of explaining dinosaur bones that medevil people may have found.

Probably the reverse. Bones have been found since recorded history. However interpretations of them is more recent (past several hundred years). An example, the mythological beast Griffith was determined to be a triceratop put together wrong. As was the cyclops that was a mammothput together standing up. The Single eye was where the tusks entered the skull .

I think it is possible that lizards were taken waaaaay out of context.......and so we have the birth of dragons.
