Except for, in a few states that require minimum wage, the majority of waiters and waitresses make about $2.15 an hour and must claim earnings up to minimum wage, so if you don't tip, they actually lose money. Is this fair?

I think it's really bad. But that's all some people can manage to do for a job. I was going to guess waiter or waitress as they are the ones who make the minimum wage.

There is a great book called "Nickled and Dimed". The author is a magazine reporter and was challenged by her boss to give up her relatively cushy job and to go work around the country at minimum wage to see how she would get by and to report on her findings. She didn't tell anyone that she was doing this "undercover".

She had lots of jobs and worked at WalMart and restaurants. Despite all the horrible bosses and bad customers and horrible wages, the common theme through all of her expericiences was that 1. She was barely able to get by; and 2. She got by through the kindness of all of her coworkers who were in the same boat as she was.

Really a good read and a good view of what life is like when you don't have many opportunities.

The author has another book out now about how the middle class lives very close to the edge: as in one paycheck away from real financial problems.

Yes, not tipping waiters and waitresses is inexcusable. I always give at least 20 percent unless service is horrible and the person could care less. I hate it when I have friends and they want to split the meal but then try to take control of the tipping and insist on tipping on the pre-tax amount. Very embarassing.

Yeah it's fair. You tip for good service. If the server is rude and gives you sh*tty service then they aren't doing their job. When I go to a restaurant and the service is good, I do tip well...if they're awful I leave a penny so they know I didn't just forget to leave a tip. If someone thinks they don't get paid enough with tips than they better rethink their methods of work and have an attitude adjustment. Either that or find a new job.

EDIT: Most places do compensate on the paycheck if the tips you claim didn't amount to minimum wages at the end of a pay period. Most wait staff don't even claim all their tips anyways just so they end up with more money on pay day, and more on their tax returns. They actually make out better than people who work minimum wage, and better than me who works in the kitchen.

Absolutely not. In my opinion, if tips do not at least put the hourly wage at minimum wage the employer needs to compensate the waiter for it.

Some people just don't know how to tip adequately and this isn't fair to the wait staff AT ALL. A waiter can be superb and attentive and do everything perfect and still end up with a couple bucks and some change just because some people don't know proper tipping etiquette.

I seriously think something needs to be done about it.

If the company doesn't do a good enough business than they need to find a job else where. I know there is a high demand for good waiters/waitress. you can make alot of money if you know what your doing. I don't understand though if you work for a restaurant how it is that they don't have to meet minimum wage? why should they get away with it simply because people leave tips? A lot of jobs have incentives what makes restaurant owner so special?

I don't think that is fair making $2.15. Where up to I know ever state have a set minimum wage if you are legal it doesn't matter what kind of job you are doing. Will I think the people those who work in farmers are the lowest paid workers in America.

It is fair, because when I was a waitress, I actually averaged about fifteen dollars an hour on top of the 2.17/hr.

You get to know your customers well enough, and you'll know which ones will or won't tip.
One lady actually told me it was against her religion to tip. Do you think I ever got her order right again?

No, it's not fair. But neither is the fact that some, or dare I say most, waiters and waitresses avoid paying taxes on 80% of their tips.

I guess you have to be a good server. I know that sucks, but thats life. I worked for some Indian's at a hotel and I made $4.36 an hour after taxes, while they raked in the money everynight. Life isn't fair..................

no one interior of america can legally be paid decrease than minimum salary, even if or not they are waiters. If the sum of their salary and their assistance does not a minimum of equivalent minimum salary, the corporation has to make up the version.
