why do flaggers (road maintenace crews) nod at drivers when they pass them?

If we happen to be first in line my husband and I will even have a conversation with those "nasty flaggers" and (GOD FORBID) usually offer them a cold one.

We get tired of waving .The truth of it . Let's say you have 100 cars you let go in line and 69 of them throw their hand up to wave at you .sooner or later you will nod your head too lol
