Well believe it not fish can drown in very specific circumstance. When a fresh water fish (lakes and rivers) is placed in salt water (ocean) it's kidneys attempt to dilute the salt content by retaining water. In a very short time the amount of retained water stops the gills from working and the fish drowns as it continues to gulp water which can not be expelled.

Obviously, this circumstance is a very rare occurrence.

YES! If the water is polluted and there is little or no oxygen in the water, if their gills are clogged by algae, too much silt, or other natural or man-made pollutants, or other reasons. That's why a big fish tank needs that pump that makes bubbles; it's putting oxygen in the water. Without it fish gasp on the surface w open mouths for oxygen. Hey. You should try turning off all the electronic things around you for a while and just THINK!

yes they can smartass. Put a fish in a spinning container of water and he will drown. Oxygen is depleted from the water and the fish can no longer pass water through it's gills causing a drowning action.

All the time.People keep them in small containers with little surface area (fish bowl). There is not enough movement so O2 doesn't dissolve into the water. They use all that is available and then slowly suffocate. There gills becomed flushed because all the blood rushes to them trying to absorb more O2. Then they die- drowned. HaHa

yes they can, it has something to do with the swim bladder.if the fish is ill, it's swim bladder may overfill, slowing or stoping the fishes movement.fish need a steady supply of water coursing over thier gills or they will drown.
