You would think by now we would be playing games in 3d, surfing the net in 3d but it seems like the world has abandoned VR. What's the deal? When are we going to get into the 3D world, it is the next logical piece of technology to improve our computer experience.

too difficult to create, virtual reality is more than a helmet with a videogame a couple of inches from your eyes. It is also very expensive. To create a FPS in VR would take a lot of work, To have a true VR experience you must feel everything. The wind, the dust, the sounds must be real, the boxes you will lean on for cover in a FPS and so on. They have VR for games like flight-sims because they can create the cockpit and put a kick *** video and audio system in around you and set it on a kind of hydralic setup to give you the sensation of movement.

Like most buzz word concepts the idea was sound (and still is) but the hardware just didnt provide (and still cant) the muscle to make it possible in a deep way. Aside from the hardware to drive it there is the level of detail and input required to flesh it out.

Look at it this way, even if the hardware existed to create a house in a 'virtual world' how long does it take to create a house in the real world? Many months. Things dont spring up out of nothing even in a virtual world, it takes a ton of effort to create them, sometimes more than the real thing.

Virtual reality isn't yet all that realistic. Image processing equipment is slow, so the images don't keep up with your motion and you get seasick. We're only just starting to make haptic (touch) simulators and the first I heard of a device which could sense and reproduce odours was last week. Humans have 347 different odour receptors. And I haven't heard of a taste sensor or synthesiser which can handle sweet, sour, salt, bitter, umami, hot (chilli) and cool (menthol). We've got more than five senses; temperature, body position (you can stay upright even with your eyes shut), hunger and thirst for instance.

Heh. The 3D world is alot of pixels ;). You'd be better off walking in prerecorded worlds where you are being dragged through a inline style of game. Otherwise, to get true VR in a FPS or something, you'd have to place in every spec you can see...
