A torque stick is used with an air impact wrench to avoid over-tightening lug nuts when attaching wheels to a vehicle. The thicker the stick, the more resistance. It works by flexing rotationally when a pre-set torque limit is reached. By doing so, it resists further torquing by the air impact gun, and allows us to hear that unmistakable "ratcheting" sound we all know and love.

It keeps a tire tech from overtorquing a fastener, which could snap a wheel stud, and undertorquing, which could cause a wheel to come off while the vehicle is being driven.

Torque sticks are a guide only, and are no substitute for hand-torquing using a torque wrench. A good source for correct torque specs on vehicles is the Bennett Garfield Tire Guide (aka "The Tire Bible"), published out of Florida. This invaluable resouce, updated yearly, can give you nearly everything you need to know about tires.

And no, I do not work for them ;)

there is your answer. the diameter of the stick allows it to flex more or less depending on what torque it is rated for. the are designed to work with impact guns. when they reach their torque they just sit there and flex while the impact gun is on them.
