Because they all want to be rich. They know people will pay however how much it is, and people have set up their lives to waste gas. For example, the commuters. They drive so far everyday to work and live in the burbs. They set up their lives to waste gas out of greed. They dont want to live in the city because they fear it, but they want the big money it pays. So they waste gas to get to work. And notice, when people drive they havent slowed down. They still are buying big p.u. trucks and suvs. Nothing has changed except people are whining, and the fuel industry knows it.
Yeah, they all want to make a buck. Everyone from Opec, the oil companies, and the brokers and futures traders. Its a freeforall, and there is nothing the government can do about it. People blame either the Oil Companies, or Bush, when its really us to blame. We chose to be oil dependent.

Thanks to the wacko enviromentalists, we depend on imported saudi oil, who currently have set the price of oil at $75 per barrel.
The American oil companies only make 8.5 cents per gallon of gasoline sold, verses our goverment, who charges 16 cents a gal. federally, and here in CA another 40 cents goes to the state.
That's almost 60 cents in taxes PER GALLON.
Now try tell me that it's the oil companies that are greedy.
