The ones that are old enough to "fight and die" ARE old enough, it's the others that cannot.

When the voting age was lowered to 18 in the 1970's by the federal government, so was the drinking age. The argument used to lower the age was that if people were old enough to fight and die, they were old enough to vote and drink. But the number of deaths from drinking and driving skyrockets. New evidence also showed that the younger someone began to drink, they more likely they were to binge drink, or develop a drinking problem. Too many 18 year olds were simply not mature enough to handle alcohol use yet. So individual states raised the limits - usually to 21. After all, use because an 18 year old is old enough to die doesn't mean we have to let him kill himself with alcohol.

As a former soldier, trust me, I've asked myself this question. Although I think that too much emphasis is put on the ability to purchase and consume alcohol. It was with the best intentions that the government raised the legal age and it has been shown to save lives on the road, so perhaps the ends justify the means.
P.S. If you're stationed on Fort Bliss, TX you can buy beer/alcohol legally in the stores on post.

If you ask me, they aren't old enough to fight and die in wars. They should change that. I made a terrible decision going as early as I did. I wish I had waited till I was about 23-24. Then I would have been mature enough to stay out of trouble. But I started drinking when I was 14.

Yeah, that's absurd. I have no answer to your question, I think it is stupid. So we can make a law that you can't drink when you're under 21, but you can have a baby when you are 14? That's bull. Put everyone on the pill I say! And I think you should be able to drink at 18.

Because American teens/young adults are not physically and mentally developed enough to handle the responsibility of drinking alcohol. Physically your brain and body aren't yet developed completely. And I really don't think 18-20 yos are mature enough to deal with drinking and not being ridiculous or killing people with their cars. Sorry buddy, it's our culture, we raise children to be reckless and ignorant.
Also, remember that we have a VOLUNTEER military. They are old enough to die in "wars" because they chose to.

I asked the same question at your age! My gf came from France to spend the summer with us and she was amazed at our obsession with alcohol. There was no obesion with alcohol in France because 12 year olds could go nto the wine store and purchase it and everyone had wine with supper. The United States is insane with its laws. What you can't have, you crave. Idiotic.

I'd bet a million bucks that no one's going to bother you about drinking if you go fight in the war.
