Every computer on the Internet need some numbers to identify themselves, which are unique and different from others. Like every house, person have different telephone number. There numbers are called IP (Internet Protocol) address.
IPv4 (IP version 4, by the way version 6 IPv6 is already on the way) look like 192.168.1.2 Has four parts separated by . (dot) each part is from 1-255, cannot be more than that. For more detail about IP address search Google, or Yahoo.

Since these numbers (millions of them), cannot remember by human easily, then Human has created familiar names like BBC, Yahoo, Google, eRealMedia, called Domain Names, so that can be easily remembered and can be pass to others for easy name.

But there is something called DNS(Domain Name Server) which keep track of both Human Like Names (Domain Names) and IP address and translate between them when need for communication, Internet.

A domain name is the words you can find after the @ in your email address. It works like a home address. For example, if your email is hello@yahoo.com, it means your name is hello and you "live" (receive emails) at yahoo. It is the "big box" where all the neigborhood's mail is stored and sorted by name.

The domain name is what you type into the bar at the top of your browser to get to a web site. Such as "yahoo.com" or "whitehouse.org". It is also called a URL (Universal Resouce Locator) or web address.
