Funny you should ask that, my 11 year daughter and her 12 year old friend were sitting on the couch talking and to me it sounded as though they were arguing, I asked them to please stop arguing, and both of them turned to me and said "we are not arguing, we are debating". When I asked them what they meant by that, my daughter told me that debating is sharing ideas and opinions in order express meaning and arguing is using verbal abuse or anger to express meaning. so I think that about covers it

Debate by its very nature means a reasoned discussion. An argument tends to involve yelling.

In a debate, one person makes their point, the other person responds to that point, then vice versa. There is no interrupting.

In an argument, there's not a lot of listening, just waiting for the other person to stop talking so you can make your point.

Arguing can be organized or disorganized (the latter being far more prevalent). Debate is a more organized form of argument where opponents present supporting facts in a disciplined fashion to support their arguments usually with a moderator to keep the opponents in line.

Debating is when you are listening and responding to the other side using logic. Arguing is when you are stating something without listening to the reasoning of the other side. This is why lawers argue in court, and don't debate in court.

A debate is more civilized and you are showing the facts of two ideas. An argument is more passionate, personal, and informal. Both can be resolved but in two different ways.

Debate has a semblance of logic. Point, counterpoint. Arguing usually involves emotions clouding issues and, of course, logic. Debate has established protocol.
