Is there any difference between petrol or diesel turbochargers?

Question

I have a petreol powered car and need to replace its worn out turbo, I happen to have a turbo from a diesel cat gathering dust. Research so far shows that the diesel turbo will produce 8 psi of boost without modification whereas the turbo on my produced 5 psi before I modified it to run at around 8 psi.
I ask the question because petrol cars reach higher revs and reach them faster than diesels.So would the tubo be spinning faster than it is designed to if used on a petrol engine?

the deisel turbo is designed to run at lower rpms and will actually hurt performance above 3500 rpms on your gas(petrol) engine it will give you fast spoolups but you will watch your boost drop significantly when your engine reaches rpms above that of a deisel

They are the same yet different. The diesel turbo is built to withstand higher hotter exhaust temp as are the bearings and fins. Before continuing I would recommend going to a sevice center or contact the manufacturer about compatabililty. I do not believe the swap will work though. Good Luck

It should not - psi is psi (a consistent measure like a pound of feathers is equal to a pound of lead). There may be a different bolt pattern which will cause in getting it mounted on the vehicle as it exists. {PS "Petrol" is just a different, clarified grade of diesel}

Basically no they are both air pumps that can ram more air into your engine in a given time.I don't think your problem would be with turbo speeds of the impeller but mounting and lubrication feeds.Regards Mick

Adam K is correct.

Anyway the other difference is that ones a PETROL turbocharger and the other is DIESEL turbocharger.

It wont make any difference, the wastegate spring controls the max boost so it cant over rev.
