Perhaps...simply put, ......to become a better writer, you must first become a better listener!

Just a simple answer from a female who truly may be on to something. Just think about it for a minute!

If you read more of other people's stuff then you invariably start writing like them, or worse yet you start unconsciously taking their stuff. Personally, I think life experience, all good writers(Hemingway for instance) write about what they know. If you know what you are talking about then the writing comes easier. Sorry, I would say more but I have some mindless trash TV to watch.

Read more...seriously the more you read the more exposure you have to different styles of writing thus making you a better writer.

I am very young and I have won various writing competitions. I was really bad at first. It takes practice and also empathy (understanding being able to relate to people's emotions) and style. You have to develop your own sense of words and how you use them. If you send me a writing sample I would be more then happy to help you.

Reading, yes. Writing, yes. Also, find a supportive forum to share your work and try to be open to criticism (my biggest obstacle). Practice your craft as often as you can, even when you don't feel like doing it. Most importantly, believe in yourself (my second biggest obstacle). Good luck.

Read other author's books that are really good. Also practice techniques like learning how to fuse two senses together(forgot what it was called) and using similes is great.

Read more, write as much as you can. You should also take note of other authors' writing style. Read their books and find out how they write.

Keep a journal with you and write down things when they come to mind. I have written great poems by doing that.
