Dogs are more functional.
Good for watching house.
Good for protection.
I prefer cats. They lower maintenance.
Dogs can sometimes drive you nuts with their "neediness".
I used to watch friends dog when they out of town.
Dog had separation anxiety....BIGTIME.
Watched me.
If I went into living room.
Dog went into living room.
I went into kitchen.
Dog went into kitchen.
And if he lost track of me.
He panicked and started search.
Like some kinda haint.
Cats can be demanding.
My friends cat was ....pet me pet me pet me.
And he would prick you with one little claw to get your attention.
And if you did not pet him ...he would insist.
with a little claw.
But that is when you are around.
When you are gone they sleep or look out the window.
Dogs.....
you don't know what they are doing.
They could be howling all day.
Abject misery until you get home.
And then they are so happy to see you they pee in the floor.
Cats take less energy. They don't droll or slobber.
(a lot of cats drool when you pet them...but not like St Bernards.)

I've owned several of both species and I prefer dogs hands down. Dogs are much more social, less volatile personality wise and the majority of dogs will do anything to make you happy. Cats want food and you to get out of the way. Dogs want you and food and some times, to run around and be crazy while you take them out for a walk. Cats don't want to learn basic leash commands. Dogs - most would fall over to do anything you ask. They're easier to train and learn faster than most of the cats I've owned. I find dogs very graceful and most breeds stay off the tables, the counters, the dish rack and won't pee in the tub if you miss a litter box cleaning. I grew up with whippets. I find them very lean, elastic gated and incredibly fast.
To me, they're far more aristocratic than some snobby feline.
I love racing dogs. Can't do that with most cats. They'd take off and screw the other cats in the area. They're just targets for a fight. Most dogs are politer than that.
I've been attacked more often by cats and the injuries afterwords were more painful, got infected and overall were much worse than any injury I got from a dog. The exception to that was when one of the family dogs accidentally ran into my leg during some free play time. He left me with a bruise bigger than the one a horse gave me when it kicked me. It's a fond memory nevertheless.
Now with all that said, I do love my cats. I just prefer dogs. My cats have attitudes and will cuddle with me, but it has to be on their own terms.

Several reasons:
Cats have that SMELL if they are indoors- the litterbox deal- no matter how often you change it or what system you have.
Dogs are better suited to be companions rather than pets, if you know what I mean.
That "elegant structure" creeps some people right out by the way they hold their bodies and the way they move- they slink.
I've had cats and dogs and have loved my cats- but it's a different relationship; it's much closer with a dog, more heart to heart. Dogs bond harder.

I have both and they each have their pros and cons.
what I do not like about cats is their scratching on the furniture and running through the house at night when I am trying to sleep. also the litter box mess, has to be cleaned everyday and I hate cleaning them and the litter boxes are messy.
With the dog I have the only problem is that someone has to be here to feed her and let her out to go potty.:)She is also a good deterant to the criminal types of people.
I love them all. They're great to have around and would not want to part with any of them.Guess I'm just a glutten for punishment.

if you would rather choose a cat, you do that. it just means that you do not have the time to put into a dog. dogs require a lot of human love when they live with a human. one thing i remember my dad always saying, " dogs come when they're called. Cats take a message and get back with you." A lot of people choose dogs because they have extra love to share. they need something that "belongs" to them or they need a companion. sounds like a cat is better for you. you have less time to devote than some. you know what you want. good girl!!

I love my "mangy mutts". I prefer dogs to cats because 9 out of 10 times, a dog is going to be a hell of a lot more loyal than a cat. Mine are excited and bark and jump all over me when I get home. They want my love where ever, whenever, not just at their convenience like most cats. Cats have a tendency to be crankier and have more attitude than dogs. To me, it is all about the love and loyalty, that is why they call dogs mans best friend, not cats.

I prefer dogs. It is because dogs in my opinion are sooo much cuter! I think kittens are cute but not as much as puppies. Dogs can also be taught tricks, can help disabled people, and are a good companion and protecter. Also more people are allergic to cats then dogs. And dogs are better for familes. If you are single or alone a cat would be better though. Dogs are better to play with though. Sorry if you don't agree with me but this is how I feel.

Dogs are dependent upon affection and survive only in groups. Cats are independent.
Dogs therefore mix with others better that cats, and are more naturally affectionate than cats, which do not depend upon that to survive.
People that want affectionate animals put up with the dog messes because of that wonderful upside.

Supposedly, dogs can be taught more tricks, and have more of an opportunity to be made money off of. I really don't see why, since cats can make over 100 vocal sounds, while dogs can only make 10.
