I was in line FOREVER today behind this cute little old lady who poured her purse out onto the counter to pay with nickels and dimes. Why do old people do this?

I'm not saying it's wrong that they do this, I'm just curious why they do it.

Oh my gosh you people are so cranky -- I'm not trying to belittle the woman....

Maybe they are on a fixed income. My grandmother also used to do that and she said "once you break a twenty dollar bill it's gone, might as well use up the change". For those who lived through the depression, nothing was ever wasted. I know it's a pain to wait sometimes however one of these days we might be in the same situation and I hope someone doesn't mind me doing it too :).

Some older women do not have any money but what is left in the money jars. After the rent is paid, the medical bills, and the medicine, and the food, there is very little money left.

They may rely on the money jar that they were saving up for emergencies, especially if the woman is old enough to remember the bank closures 1935. If there is an emergency they take out their cash and go to the store.

Try to be more patient or find another line.

Because nickels and dimes are still money. When you get old and live off of social security, you will do what you have to do to pay for things too.

because they know how to save money and they use everything they got. They don't just throw the change away like teenagers and so many other people these days. Is it that big of a deal that they do this?

Many banks charge 30 or 40 cents for every dollor you bring in as change. Better to get use out of all of it.

Remember back in their day nickels and dimes could buy them so much that's probably all they carried around.

They have nothing better to do than to stand in line and count the coins, and I think people give them a little attention when they do this.

Maybe, my child, that's the only money she had. Unfortunately many of our elders are living on reduced income. Patience is a virtue I'm glad that you had.
