A 'jihad' means 'holy war'...now I think this means war on all non-Muslims or at least on Christians and Jews. Muslims see most Western countries as 'Christian', or founded on Chistian beliefs like America and Australia, however, this DOESN'T mean that all Muslims are after our blood! There are some very friendly, wonderful Muslims out there (and I am a born again Christian), it's only the extremists/ fundies we need to worry about. Same with my religion!

Jihad is an Arabic word meaning, literally, "struggle." There are different kinds: the "greater jihad," which is a personal "battle" to become a better person (giving up smoking r some such), and a "lesser jihad," which is the defense of the Islamic faith against the infidel. The word is usually translated as "holy war," which puts it into the second meaning. Muslims declare jihad quite frequently, against us, and against each other (a practice we gave up for the most part, back in the 17th century). The immediate concern, is that Americans are targets. 9/11 was an aspect of jihad against the U.S.

Jihad, in Islam, the struggle to please God. Jihad is the duty of all mainstream Muslims, who belong to the branch known as Sunni Islam. There are four ways they may fulfill a jihad: by the heart, by the tongue, by the hand, and by the sword. The first refers to the inner, spiritual battle of the heart against vice, passion, and ignorance. The second way means speaking the truth and spreading the word of Islam with one's tongue. The third way involves choosing to do what is right and to combat injustice and what is wrong with action, or one's hand. The fourth way refers to defending Islam and waging war against its enemies with the sword.

i'm a muslim. first of all, killing innocents is not jihad. if there is any muslim who claims that it's a jihad challenge him where in Quran or Prophet Muhammad's Hadith (teachings) that say or approve that. suicide bomber will go straight to hell because suicide for any reasons is totally prohibited in Islam.

Jihad actually can be widely interpreted and that's why it can be easily misused by twisted minds (terrorists). It can also refered to as whatever acts that is required to be performed in Islam especially in difficult situation. For example, living in America where the majority is non-muslim, to perform prayer and observe fasting in Ramadhan is not easy thus to work oneself to perform this duties as Muslim is also considered Jihad.

There should not be any impact on american people because this country believes in freedom thus, respect on Islam as another religion should always be there.

The actual problem now is actually mainly played by the media by relating terrorism and Islam thus creating hate and stereotype towards Islam. There is no such thing as Muslim terrorists. Islam does not promote terrorism. I personally don't think those who committed terrorism are pure Muslim. And they definitely brought shame to Islam.
