It doesn't. That date marks the end and beginning of a calendar cycle, but it isn't the end of the calendar or the world.

Today's date in the Mayan calendar is 12.19.13.8.0. December 21, 2012 is 13.0.0.0.0. The world will really end on 13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.13.
13.13.13.13.13.13.13.
13.13.13.13.0.0.0.0. I don't know the real-life date for that, but it isn't for millions and millions of years.

My best guess is: That is as far as they got with their calendar making when some cataclysmic event occurred which caused them to stop working on the Mayan Calendar. It could have been war, famine, plague, the arrival of the White man or some other natural disaster that interrupted their calendar making.

Remember, they were chiseling in stone without the aid of modern tools or computers.

There are actually 3 Mayan calenders, the one about to end is called the 'Long Count.' To know what will happen at the end, ask what happened at the beginning: August, 3114 BC is when the current Long Count began. The world obviously did not 'end.' This is simply the period for which they calculated based upon their knowledge of astronomy.

In some legends relating to the Mayan culture and their calender, people believe that very day is when the world will come to an end.

Personally, I don't. I believe we will recieve some sort of warning from the Lord before anything like that happens. Jesus would definately have his second coming before the world ends.
