First, find out what DSL service is avaliable is your area. When you order the service, they will send filters and a Modem. Then, you need to get a router. Read the instructions and install the modem and filters. Then, connect your router to the modem. The modem should be connected to the desktop, which should be near a phone line. Next, get a wireless adapter and connect it to your laptop. Call the Geek Squad and install it.

1. 3 Ethernet cables....specs are cat V with rj45 connectors
2. a router or a switch. I recommend a five port switch. it's cheaper and doesn't mess up as often.
3. the gateway or access point to your internet connection. this is usually a gateway provided to you as part of your isp service. the switch plugs into that.
4. plug both of the computers in to the switch. use the third cable to plug into the primary uplink port on the switch, and plug it into the gateway.

From there, you should be able to use the computers' software to enable the internet connection. Go to the control panel, and device manager to make sure your network adapters are in place. make sure your nic is working and you should be gold.

that's just for hard wiring. if it's wireless you want, well, that's a whole different ball of wax. i recommend cables for beginners.

first make sure your computers are close to a cable outlet. if you dont have one, your ISP will make one where ever you want. You will also be provided a modem from your ISP. since you have two computers, you'll need a router which plugs into your modem, a power strip almost. plug your desktop into that. if you want to use your laptop wirelessly, buy a network card (http://www.bestbuy.com) and a wireless router, also at bestbuy. both of these cost any where from $40-100.
