two kinds of things

1. spin-offs (things that were invented as part of the intensive work to develop and improve spaceflight) the number of spin-off items that improve our lives is super huge, one example, lazers, used in many things including printers

2. knowledge, wonder, pride - these are the intangibles, just like in the arts, but they are still real, of all the things the government has spent money on in the last 50 years, the space program gives me the most pride and excitement

the space program has in fact done something very useful for me. Because of the space program there are gps satalites in stationary orbit around the globe. Without those, it would be much harder to navigate when I'm out in the open water with no landmarks in sight. gps keeps me on course, keeps acurate time as well as tracks my speed so I can estimate how long until I make land. Also there would be no satalite tv without the space program, or xm radio. Also we wouldn't have the space telescopes like hubble to look at distant places and find clues on how this planet might have come into being.

The space program has given the average American something to be proud of. Those who say it is a senseless waste of money have little foresight. It is our destiny to venture into space. We have no other choice, for the earth cannot sustain life forever and the sun will surly die.

Pride.

I am not American, but I am old enough to remember Kennedy's promise to get a man on the moon before 1970. At the time, we all sat there and said "Oh, yeh. Sure you will (I think not)".

Not many projects ever get done on time in this world. To have got a project of this immensity in on time is just incredible and a great achievement by all involved.

Several drugs like gamma interferon. New metals, ceramics, glues. An awful lot of domestic electronics owe a little to space research.
