It's pretty common for the toilet to overflow. It usually means you used too much paper before flushing and therefore it stopped up and caused the water to overflow on you. What you do in a situation like that is grab the nearest plunger and put the rubber part over the exit hole in the bottom of the toilet bowl and then push the plunger down and pull and repeat a few times. Then lift the plunger out of the bowl and the water should go back down and you should be okay from there.

It happened to me several times.
Cause? The siphon had accumulated a lot of....."debris".....over the years, and anything more than the mellow yellow would catch in it going down. I had to stand over it - plunger in hand - every time i had to flush a bowl containing "solids"!
Solution? I installed a new toilet. Hasn't happened since.
Conclusion? Toilets are our friends, but they can turn on you really quickly when you least expect it.

Calm down Blondie........take a plunger and go at it. I am a maintenance man and I have to plunge toilets all the time. I hate it but its my job. First time in 39 years is pretty good odds. Lucky you really.....(smile)

Took a plunger to the stopped up toilet, and mopped up the mess. Threw both out afterward, and washed my hands with soap and really, really hot water.
Not an especially sexy moment.

yes, many times. When my kids were little, they had a fascination with the potty. They would throw their toys in and see if it would flush. I would grab all the towells I had, and call Rotor Rooter
