If you are worried that getting a tattoo will turn "into some stupid adolescent move," then, I don't believe you really should get a tattoo. But if you are serious about it, first, check out the tattoo parlor for cleanliness--make sure they don't reuse their needles. Please do not do it yourself, or let a friend do it, or go to a tattoo party where some jerk who claims to be a professional is getting drunk off his butt while he works! Second, choose a tattoo that you will want to see on your body for the rest of your life. Third, get plenty of rest and drink a lot of water the day before. Tattoos are not for everyone, and if you faint in the process...well, hope you land somewhere soft! Best wishes.

Probably one of the best things to do before you get a tattoo is talk to several older people (30's 40's 50's) who have a tattoo. Ask them questions such as 1. How old they were when they got their tattoo. 2. Why did they get it. 3. Have they ever had any regrets about their decision, if so, what were they.
That would probably give you better insight into what some of the second thoughts you might have.
If youre still "iffy" on the idea - don't.
Let's face it - you can get one anytime.
Regret may be forever.

Check out a number of tattoo places. Look at all the flash, and work that they have done. Think about it for a while. And then go and look at everything again. Don't just pick the first thing that strikes your fancy. Make sure you pick something that means something to you. Don't go for the "cool" in things. Start with something smallish, you don't want to jump into a full sleeve or you whole back.
You have to remember that it is going to be with you for life. I got a tattoo for myself when I turned 18, I still like the one I got. I'm 38 now.

Answer this question. Is there anything in your life that you have consistently been crazy over for most of your years? Any toy, cartoon, picture, person, object, etc? There might have been a time when you were into a certain band, sport, toy, cartoon character, and such and it was THE COOLEST thing. But if you're like most people, you change and it wears off eventually and you're into something else.
Tats don't wear off. Fade maybe, but not wear off. Are you sure you are "into" enough whatever it is you're going to put on your body that you won't think it's silly or be embarrassed by it eventually? If you can't think of one thing that has consistently been so ingrained into your person for most of your life, I'd hold off on the tat.

Go rafting down the Colorado River. See Central Park from the top of the Empire State Building. Eat real Texas barbeque at The Salt Lick near Austin.

You should make sure that you can trust the place you get the tattoo at. Also don't get a tattoo with some guys name or a bands name because you are probably going to regret it.

If it took a year to think about getting a tattoo, then it must not be for you to get, besides you don't need some tattoo to prove that you are an adult.

Come to your senses and don't do it. Wait a year or two and see if the desire is still there then perhaps talk to someone who's had one over 20 years and get their perspective, I think you'd be surprised. Tattoo inks are not approved by the FDA, there's a reason

Get a Hep B. vaccince. Most places are clean but it doesn't hurt. I thought about mine for months. Make it personal not just something you see on the walls at the place. I also made sure the mine is in a place (On my left side of my lower stomach) covered most of the time so it doesn't hurt my professional life.

The best thing to do before getting a tattoo is to realize that it is next to impossible to get rid of!
