It's so that the World Cup contains at least ONE game that doesn't really matter so both teams can actually TRY TO SCORE!!!! Geez, I'm so sick of 1-0 games where the only goal is scored on a penalty kick! I want to like soccer, but it's so freaking HARD TO SCORE!! Make the goal bigger, or make teams play like 7-on-7 in overtime, DO SOMETHING!
By the way, I'm serious about the answer - look at the historical record for the third place games - there are always more goals scored than normal.

Why any place after 1st.
If you do not win 1st you are a looser, no matter how you slice it.

because you cant just have first and second. you need the trinity. its like in the olympics, the podium is never just two, its three.
