Ulfkeitel Couplande, a Viking Soldier, known as Ulf the Elder, was born in 996 in the Romsdalen Valley in the county of Møre og Romsdal, Norway, on the banks of the Rauma River. At an early age he became a soldier in the army of Olaf II of Norway and arrived in England in 1015 where he and a band of Vikings joined Canute the Great in the Battle of Ashingdon. In the battle he saved Canute's life twice during the fierce conflict and was rewarded with a tract of land in Cumbria which today the small village now bears his name, Coupland. His son, Ulfkeitel the Younger, inherited his lands and his reputation for fighting and fought with Harald III of Norway at the Battle of Stamford Bridge. The Viking loss at Stamford Bridge marked the end of the Viking Era in England and no further invasions were made from Scandinavia. Couplande the Younger is listed in the Domesday Book as "ULF of YORKSHIRE." The descendants acquired large holdings of land which today are known as the COPELAND BARONY and the COPELAND FOREST
