You don't say how old your son is. That will have a huge impact on how you handle this situation and how he views it as he gets older.
My first response would be to tell you to count your blessings and put that man in your past. Much less drama and pain, not to mention visitation, custody, etc. BUT, no matter how you feel about it, do not speak badly of this man in front of your son. Simply be honest with him about the facts and let him make his own judgements. There may come a day when he will want to see this man again and you do not want your son to feel you had any hand in keeping them apart. Stress to him how much YOU love him and be the best parent you can be to him.
Good thoughts & prayers for you...

Go after the father for every penny he has and leave it at that, any man can be a father takes a special man to be a daddy ..and alot of men can be great daddies..
Dont make the same mistake i did, i paved the road, making up excuses for my x to my kids, buying them bday presents and x mas presents and putting his name on it so they'd think he cares.. he'd call them every once in a blue moon , when it was convient for him, id drive 6 hours while he drove 3 to meet up to get the kids and those were once ever 2 to 3 years..
my oldest son is 13 and cant understand why his dad doesnt want to be more in his life.. what his dad does is.. one moment gives him hope that he wants to be a part of his life, then rips it from him later on, its as if he's continually walking out on him over and over again..
Get the money ur kids deserve and let him drift away.. dont spend all the energy and time that i did (10 years) hoping a man would eventually grow up and be a real dad.. if he leaves once and for all your child will get over the initial hurt and move on but if u keep fighting to bring him back , all it does is cause emotional pain for your child every time, they need to either be in it for the long haul or out of it.. but if he wants out.. let him go.. ur son will be better off with out him then with him in that case..
Good luck to u and your son..

It's never easy being a Single parent but, the very fact that your showing such concern for your son shows your a great parent. Fill that space left by that dead beat with Love for your son and he'll have More than enough love to take him anywhere in Life he choices to go and the DEAD BEAT father will be the only one Missing out.

If your son's father doesn't want anything to do with him, then it will be easy to get custody. If you are together I suggest divorce since he will not want you next. Take him to court and make sure that you get an appropriate amount of compensation. I hope you find solace in his leaving.

reassure your son that you will always be there for him. regardless of his age, it is a terrible thing for the child or adult child to have to face. my son went through the same with his dad. it started at 16 and he is now 26. he has two wonderful sons and is raising them alone and so it did not affect him in a negative way in that sense.
