Because of the way your knees bend forward, you can't run in any other direction other than forward. If your knees bent backwards or sideways then you would be able to run in those directions. What happens when you run backwards or sideways is the same for everybody - you don't move very fast.

Ever since the beginning of time, human-beings have always been obsessed with efficiency. If it's not efficient, it is obsolete and, thus, would be discarded. The same applies to when Adam and Eve first walked. I bet they asked themselves the same questions and discovered that, for many obvious reasons, it is far more efficient to walk/run forwards, which produces more kinetic energy and momentum, than to do the same backwards... HOWEVER, walking/running backwards is more efficient in producing a greater force, walking forwards is simply a faster mode of transportation.

We could probably walk sideways but if we walked backwards we'd either always bump into things and each other or have really sore necks.

If we ran side ways and backwards, we'd run iton a lot of stuff. I suppose we could start running backwards everywhere, but our bodies are not suited for that. Try running backwards across a feild, you will be sore that night.

Our bodies are designed to produce the most kinetic energy.... front/back. Not side to side. It is most efficient for the body to do this, you can go sideways... you'll just be at a higher risk of injury and much slower
