No we are eager to go to space because we've watched too much Star Trek and we think we are going to meet aliens that speak English.

The human race needs to expand.

The planets offer the prospect of new materials. New ways of manufacturing in lower gravities.

The Earth is a finite resource which will in millions of years to come be consumed by an expanding dying sun.

Also if catastrophy should occur such as a super volcanoe, huge meteor hit, plague etc hit us we would have somewhere to go, albeit only a few would get the chance but mankind could then survive.

Don't forget most modern TV and communictions exist by virtue of satellites in space.
