I have never had one but have learned over many years of working in aquarium stores that Moorish Idols are a very expensive but very delicate fish. They often do not eat in captivity and therefore do not last long. There is another species that looks alot like the Moorish Idol called a Heniochus Butterfly (sp?) It's a much heartier species and eats more willingly. The Heniochus is often called "The poorman's Moorish Idol".

BTW Moorish Idols are my favorite SW fish! : )

Do not get this fish. It is better off left in the ocean. It is very hard to keep and you will be lucky if you get it to live. They have very specific dietary needs and often can not be duplicated in the home aquarium. Besides that they are not reef safe. They will nip and pick at your corals and inverts.

You can try feeding your Moorish Idol with adult brine shrimps. Even frozen ones work. I've even read reports that some folks have trained them to take dried food.

In general they are hard to maintain and are not recommended for beginners.
